Paulo Sérgio Panse Silveira,
e suas filhas Letícia e Amanda.

Cresci na zona leste da cidade, no bairro do Belenzinho. Não tenho nenhuma queixa de minha infância. Naquele tempo as crianças brincavam na rua quanto quisessem, e as conseqüências mais sérias possíveis limitavam-se a alguns arranhões e escaramuças.

Estudei no Colégio Dante Alighieri, do pré-primário ao final do secundário, de onde sai como Auxiliar Técnico de Eletrônica em 1979.

Em 1980 prestei vestibular para Medicina, até hoje não sei bem o porquê, e estudei na Faculdade de Medicina da USP.

• como se diferencia uma doença de outra?
• como se administra determinado medicamento?
• como se faz uma apendicectomia?
• etc., etc., etc...

Existe uma fama injusta, de que o patologista é o médico que detém o conhecimento dos porquês (embora tenha uma tendência a chegar sempre atrasado). Então, acreditando nisto, fiz a residência médica de Patologia, de onde saí em 1987. Decididamente não era minha praia.

Sou um dos que participam da construção deste site (Saúde Total), junto ao meu grande amigo Dr. Chao Lung Wen.

Como pesquisador, atualmente trabalho com modelos computacionais que simulam populações, baseados em técnicas de programação evolucionária. Obtive meu doutorado em 1993, defendendo a tese "Modelo Computacional para Simulações Ecológicas", e tenho me mantido nesta linha de pesquisa. Acho fascinante e me sinto tranqüilo no trabalho que faço.

Paulo Sérgio Panse Silveira and

I grew up on the east side of the city, in a district called Belenzinho. I have no complaints about my childhood. In those days, children played on the streets as much as they wanted. The worst that could happen to them was getting a few scratches.

In 1979 I earned a technical degree in Electronics from the Dante Alighieri School. In 1980 I was accepted into the Faculdade de Medicina da USP (Faculty of Medicine from the University of São Paulo). To this date, I am not quite sure why I chose Medicine.

• how do you come up with a diagnosis?
• how can you differentiate one disease from another?
• how do you prescribe and administer a particular medication?
• how do you perform an appendix surgery?
• etc., etc., etc.

The pathologist bears the unfair reputation of being a doctor who has the knowledge of the 'whys' (although he/she has a tendency to always be late...). With that in mind, I decided to do my residency in pathology and completed it in 1987. That was definitely not my cup of tea.

Consequently, and thanks to some good fortune, I ended up at the Disciplina de Informática Médica da FMUSP (Discipline of Medical Informatics at the Faculty of Medicine from the University of Sao Paulo). For that I am grateful to Professor Dr. György M. Böhm, my friend since 1988.

I helped build this web site (Saúde Total [Total Health]), along with other professionals and my good friend Dr. Chao Lung Wen.

As a researcher, I am currently working with computational models that simulate populations applying techniques of evolutionary programming. I earned my PhD in 1993 with the thesis "Computer-Based Model for Ecological Simulations". I've continued in this line of research which fascinates me.
