Summary of Research Activities

Since 1987 working with both serology and mathematical modelling applied to the development of vaccination strategies, based on data obtained by populational serosurveys and seroconversion studies for rubella, measles, hepatitis A, varicella, rotavirus A, cytomegalovirus, RSV, HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B, in collaboration with Prof.Dr. Eduardo Massad.

The results of the vaccination strategy design against rubella of his PhD thesis were applied by the Health State Secretary of São Paulo in 1992, when the immunisation programme against this infection was introduced for the first time in a State of Brazil.

Post-doctoral fellowship with Prof. Roy Anderson and Dr. James Nokes in 1993, at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London, England, UK. During the year of 1993, he spent also 3 months at the Public Health Laboratory Service, London, UK, with Dr. Bernard J. Cohen and Dr. David W.G. Brown, Division of Virology, where it was developed the technique for antibody detection against rubella in saliva samples.

Current activities include the coordination of the PhD Programme of Pathology, at the School of Medicine of The University of São Paulo, and the supervision of PhD students developing their work on:

  1. Vaccination strategies against infectious diseases;
  2. HIV transmission, pathology and seroepidemiology;
  3. Testing of new therapeutic methods
  4. Medical education and evaluation
